Last month, my family and I had the chance to visit Medieval Times. It was our very first time going. I had always wanted to go and I'm glad we finally had a chance to visit. We all had a really good time!
Medieval Times is a family dinner theater. The experience features a 4-course meal and Medieval jousting tournament, including knights, swordplay and horsemanship. There are currently nine Medieval Times locations in North America, with a tenth location in Arizona set to open this year. We visited the Baltimore location at the Arundel Mills Outlet Mall.
BEFORE THE SHOW
After checking in, we made our way into the castle. Upon entering, they gave us our crowns. We were going to be cheering on the Black and White Knight and so, our crowns were also black and white.
We gathered outside the arena in the Hall of Arms until it was time to be seated. It was adorned in a lot of Medieval décor. While we waited, we looked around the gift shop. My younger kids each got a glow wand.
They called the guests who had purchased a package first. The packages include VIP seating and priority castle and seating access, as well as other extras. We had a regular ticket. After the guests with packages were seated, they called other guests by their colors.
THE MEAL
The 4-course dinner is served in true Medieval style -- no silverware! At our seats, there was a plate, mug, bowl, and a napkin with the menu printed on it. The meal is a set menu, with a vegetarian option available. Because I have food allergies, some menu items were substituted for me from the vegetarian menu.
The regular meal includes garlic bread, tomato bisque soup, roasted chicken, sweet buttered corn, herb-basted potatoes, the dessert of the Castle, coffee and two rounds of select beverages.
The beverages include non-alcoholic choices like soda or lemonade or you can purchase beer, wine or specialty cocktails for an additional charge.
The first and second course were the garlic bread and tomato bisque. Because I had told them I had a food allergy, they brought me carrots, celery sticks and hummus instead of the garlic bread.
It was interesting drinking the soup out of the bowl!
The next course was the roasted chicken, roasted potato and buttered corn. My kids really liked the corn. My son even ate mine!
The roasted chicken was good. My picky 5-year-old enjoyed eating it with her hands.
Next, was dessert. Today's dessert was a slice of pound cake. Again, because of my allergies, they substituted a bowl of fruit.
Overall, the food was good. I would have preferred to have silverware, just because I don't like getting my hands messy. But, it was manageable. The server came around with extra napkins and a wet towelette at the end.
Often, when we go out to eat, I often feel like the kids don't eat enough. But, they liked all the food that was brought out. Or at least enough of it, that I felt they ate a good meal.
THE SHOW
Based on where your seat is, you cheer for one of the six knights. The crowns you wear are colored accordingly and you can even buy banners and flags to help cheer on your knight.
The knights participate in competitions like jousting and sword fights. My son really enjoyed watching all of it.
At one point, the knights were going around and giving out roses and my 5-year-old got one!
Overall, we had a wonderful night at Medieval Times. We would definitely visit again!
